In literary work such as a novel, the story are built on conflicts created by the author. The conflict in the story is faced by the character where the main center is the main character. Further, the characters that appear in the novel also represent the real human life. Accordingly, in the novel entitled The Color Purple, the main character named Celie is facing conflicts that ruin her psyche. As the representation of human life, this novel tells about a black woman that experience conflicts with black man in the American society in 30's era.The study addresses the question of how the main character of "Celie" deal with the conflicts in The Color Purple novel written by Alice Walker. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method where the data is analyzed using psychoanalysis approach. In order to find out how the main character dealing with the conflicts, the researcher uses the Sigmund Freud's (1936) theory of defense mechanicms. The result reveals that defense mechanisms are used by the main character in dealing with the conflicts. There are several self defenses, such as; repression, sublimation, displacement, denial, projection, intellectualization, and reaction formation that the researcher found all of them are applied by the main character. Meanwhile, all the defense mechanisms are used only to avoid and escape from the misery and painful events. Therefore, this study shows that the main character done dealing with the conflicts using letters that she writes to God and her sister. The letters also helps her to heal her psychological condition and stay sane in the middle of her conflicts.
