However, there are still many students who make mistakes in writing. One of them is an error in using simple present tense. It is also found in English student thesis proposals. This research applied qualitative method because the data are in form of words or sentences. There are eleven English Department students taken as the research participants. The data were collected through students thesis proposals and the interview. The result of this research reveals that there are four types of students errors in using simple present tense; such as omission (25 errors), addition (17 errors), misformation (11 errors), and misordering (8 errors). Moreover, there are three factors that causes the students errors in using simple present tense such as intralingual transfer, interlingual transfer, and communication strategy.
