This research aims to determine whether there is a correlation between grammar mastery and the ability of the fifth-semester English Language Education Study Program (ELESP) students at Gorontalo State Universitas Negeri Gorontalo to write essays. The sample of this study was 20 students taken from class A, the fifth-semester student of ELESP, using a purposive sampling technique. The method used in this study is a non-experimental quantitative method, and data analysis uses Pearson's Product Moment Correlation. In collecting data, this research used documentation of students' final scores in the Advanced English Grammar course in the third semester and documents in the form of worksheets for writing argumentative essays in the fourth semester. Grammar scores were collected from one of the lecturers in the Advanced English Grammar course in class A. In addition, due to the limited ability of researchers to assess students' writing, in evaluating students' worksheets for writing argumentative essays, this research used the written proficiency scoring category Heaton (1988) and also Grammarly to cross-check the scoring given by the researcher in grammatical aspect. The results of this research indicate a very weak and negative correlation between grammar mastery and students' writing abilities in essay texts. They are proved by r(-0.187). It is considered that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is rejected. In conclusion, there is a very weak and negative correlation between grammar mastery and students' writing ability in essay texts.
