The aim of this study is to find out the kinds of error in the rules of using comma in argumentative essay. It was linked to Dutwin������s theory (2010, p.97) who divided into 12 rules of comma usage. The analysis of error types is based on Corder (1982, p.36) which was classified into four types, such as omission, addition, misforming, and misordering. The sample of this study was 15 sixth semester students in English Department, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo, in the 2021/2022 academic year. This study used quantitative and qualitative method and to collect data, this study used a test which was conducted twice with the same topic. The test was conducted twice because an error referred to as an error if it occurs repeatedly. The results revealed that students made errors in 6 rules of using comma in the matter of omission and addition. The most frequent error was omission. In addition, omission in rule 4, namely the use of comma to separate introductory words from the main part of the sentence that can stand alone, was the most dominant error made by students in argumentative writing.
