This research investigates the flouting maxim cases in the movie Doctor Dolittle directed by Betty Thomas. The aim of this study is to illustrate the types of flouting maxim that occurred between John as the human character in the chosen movie and some of the supporting characters which are animals. A qualitative descriptive method was employed in analyzing the data findings. In collecting the data, the researcher observed the movie, identified the flouting cases between the chosen characters, and gathered them through note-taking. After the data were selected, the researcher categorized them based on the types of flouting maxim by using Grice's theories of Cooperative Principle and other experts' theories about flouting maxim. As a result, 22 data were found performed by John and the animals. It included four types of flouting maxims: flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relevance, and flouting maxim of manner. Based on the analysis, the flouting maxim that occurred between John and the animals happened not because of their status as different creatures, yet it is due to certain situations that made them decide to flout the maxims.
