Abstrak
This research analyzes the emergence of offensive slang in African-American community: a sociolinguistics analysis in Bad Boys movie which are uttered by the main characthers Mike lawrey and Marcus Burnet. Offensive slang is frequently used to criticize, offend belittle others and also a sense of humor. The objective of this research were to find out the categories of offensive slang in African-American community as portrait in the movie Bad Boys according to Jay (1992) theory and the function of offensive slang in African-American community as portrait in the movie Bad Boys according to Allan and Burridge (2006) theory. This study was conducted by applying descriptive linguistic method. Based on the analysis, the data showed that were 14 data that consisted of four categories in Bad Boys movie, such as epithet 5 utters, profanity 1 utter , insult 7 utters and cursing 1 utter. Then Mike and Marcus utters the offensive slangs lead to the 6 functions, such as, to address, to humiliate, to relax conversation, to express impression, to reveal anger and to show intimacy. According to the data, insults category was the most frequently used categories in this movie, with several functions causing the main characters to use offensive slang. While the least used categories were profanity and cursing. Hence, this research is expected to be a valuable resource for the scholars to learn futher about the use of offensive slangs in daily communication. Therefore, they are able to use offensive slang appropriately in the situation when they can use those offensive slangs.
