Abstrak
Social deixis is one of essential components in pragmatics which identic with the encoding of social distinction such as social class, status, and social relationship between the speaker and referent. The aim of this research is to explain the types of social deixis and their references meaning used in The Purge Election Year movie by using the theory by Levinson (1983). This study applied the qualitative descriptive method. The data was collected using the note-taking method by watching, selecting, classifying, analyzing, and describing the data that contain social deixis. The data was analyzed based on Levinson's theory about social deixis. The steps include preparing the data for analysis, reading and understanding the data, coding and classifying, making an interpretation, and the last is drawing conclusions. The result of this study shows that there were 83 data that consisted of two types of social deixis used in The Purge Election Year movie. They are including 24 data of speaker and referent, 21 data of speaker and addressee, 9 data of speaker and bystander, 6 data of speaker and bystander, 3 data of authorized speaker, and 20 data of authorized recipient. Clearly, the data shows that relational social deixis, especially speaker and referent is the most often used types in this movie. Crucially, the result of this study showed that the speaker uses social deixis in this movie in case of indicating social identity of the intended speaker, showing respect, and maintaining politeness in language. In consequence, this study will significantly help the readers, especially English learners to understand social deixis using movies as the media and how to apply it in everyday life. Broadly, the understanding of social deixis is needed so, people can speak well, politely, and in accordance with the norms that apply to certain communities.
