This study examines the social value in the novel of Jane Austen, Persuasion by analyzing the character and characterization of Frederick Wentworth using the Sociology of literature. The theory of Sociology of literature is used as it aims to discover the social phenomenon or issue in reality to the work of literature. This theory is divided into three: sociology of author, sociology of the work, and sociology of the reader. However, this study is only focused on examining the sociology of the work. Based on the results, it is found that there are reflections of social value in terms of social class in this novel. It is in the form of bad judgement and assumptions towards the characters of Frederick. However, in response to this reflection, the character of Frederick has showed the characterization of having ideal social values: tolerating and dedicating. In short, the issue of class has influenced the development of this character into having better characterization.
