Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal pada operasi bentuk aljabar di kelas VIII SMP Negeri 13 Gorontalo. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan subjek penelitian sebanyak 23 orang dengan teknik pengambilan sampel yaitu simple random sampling. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dari tes uraian dan wawancara. Untuk mengidentifikasi kesalahan siswa digunakan 4 indikator kesalahan yaitu : fakta, konsep, prinsip, dan operasi. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa masih banyak siswa yang melakukan kesalahan dalam menyelesaikan soal operasi bentuk aljabar. Untuk indikator kesalahan fakta menunjukkan bahwa jumlah siswa yang melakukan kesalahan fakta sebesar 25,29%, untuk indikator kesalahan konsep sebesar 42,20%, selanjutnya indikator kesalahan prinsip sebesar 24,27%, dan indikator kesalahan operasi sebesar 38,03%. Kemudian faktor-faktor penyebab siswa melakukan kesalahan adalah siswa belum memahami penerapan fakta, konsep, prinsip, dan operasi pada materi operasi bentuk aljabar, kurangnya ketelitian siswa dalam memahami bentuk soal dan kurangnya ketelitian siswa dalam proses menyelesaikan soal tersebut.

The objective of this descriptive research is to identify students mistakes in solving algebra operation. It was conducted at class VIII, Junior High School SMP Negeri 13 Gorontalo. As many as 23 students were selected as the sample by using simple random sampling. Essay tests and interview were used to generate the data of research. There are four indicators used in identifying students mistakes, i.e. fact, concept, principle, and operation. The result reveals that some students find it difficult to solve algebra operations. The percentage of the aforementioned indicators show that 25.29% of students commit mistakes regarding the fact, 42.20% students are having a hard time in the aspect of concept, and 24.27% and 38.03% of students are perplexed in the aspects of principle and operation of Algebra respectively. Such issues blame some factors, e.g., the lack of students understanding regarding the application of fact, concept, principle, and operation of algebra. Moreover, students lack of thoroughness in understanding and solving the operation also contributes to the inability to accomplish the mathematical test.
