This study aims to obtain 5-hydroxymethylfurfural through the conversion reaction of sago pulp cellulose and to determine the characterization of the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural product resulting from the conversion of sago pulp cellulose. To obtain cellulose, several stages were carried out: dewaxing stage, dehemicellulose stage, delegnification stage, bleaching stage, and the cellulose was characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results of the conversion of cellulose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural were characterized using High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results showed that the 5-HMF concentration was detected at 11.203 mg/mL with a retention time of 24,477 minutes, and in the area of 154274.
