ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to determine the characteristics of the brick’s compressive strength and water absorption. The bricks are made by using industrial waste sugar mills bagasse ash added with cement as an adhesive and mixed with clay and water without combustion. Bricks without combustion is expected to be one of the solutions of environmental problems in particular to reduce air pollution.
This study was made at the traditional bricksproduction location of Bulotadaa Barat village, SipatanaSub-district. Created four different samples with the composition of the mixture, Sample A (clay 90% and cement 10%), sample B (clay 85%, cement 10% and bagasse ash 5%,), sample C (80% clay, cement 10% and bagasse ash 10%) and sample D (75% clay, cement 10% and bagasse ash 15%). From each mixture were made 2 pieces of the specimen, in the form of 5 pieces given composition of mortar for compressive strength testing, and 3 pieces from each mixture for testing water absorption. The brick test is performed after 28 days old.
From the compressive strength test results obtained for samples A value is 37,19 kg/cm2, for sample B is 41,425 kg/cm2, for sample C is 36,981kg/cm2 and for sample D is 34,524kg/cm2. As for the absorption of water in the sample A obtained a value of 15,5%, sample B is 12,205%, sample C is 17,75% and sample D is 22,174%.
