Abstrak

The translation of prophets names are often different from the original name listed in the Quran. Even in English, the translation of prophets names are exactly the same as the figures in the Bible, thus it is necessary to examine whether the translation of these names still refers to the Quran. The main purpose of this study is to examine the translation strategy applied by Abdel Haleem in translating the twenty-five names of the prophets and how the translation represents the meaning in the Qur'an. This research is a 'Function-Oriented' translation/cultural studies-oriented translation which focuses on describing the function of translation in the socio-cultural situation of the recipient. Of the four translation strategies, the translator applied Naturalized in translating nine names and Adaptation in translating sixteen names. Both translations use Naturalized and Adaptation strategies, all translations of names still represent the names of the prophets in the Quran. Cultural issues become the main problem because this translation can only be understood by the target culture, so there must be a common understanding between the translator and the reader.
