Abstract
Javanese-Tondano (Jaton) community in Gorontalo are straight
descendants of the Diponegoro war’s loyal followers (1825-1830) with
Kyai Modjo as warlord sent to Minahasa. They married Minahasa women
and settled in Gorontalo. The housing typology of Jaton people in
Gorontalo indicate uniqueness.The study on architectural typology
reconstructs certain forms based on contemporary need. The architectural
typology study is considered as yardstick in this research.
The present research aimed to classify housing typology of Jaton
first settlers in Gorontalo, and to formulate conceptual design on housing
typology within two contexts of cultural elements. Qualitative-rationalistic
method was exploited in this research. Data were gathered through
observations, measurements and interviews; after that, they were
descriptively discussed.
Research results showed housing typology, both spatial type and
housing typology of Jaton community in Gorontalo, i.e. concentric type. It
was explained by the housing concept oriented to Minahasa tradition
inherent among Jaton community. Javanese cultural elements were found
within semi-fixed architectural elements, such as decorating elements of
religious setting, and agricultural equipments.
