Abstract

ABSTRACT Siska Mento (2013): “An Analysis of Metaphor in William Wordsworth’s Poems”. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data are taken from William Wordsworth’s poems. The Problem statements of this research are; what kinds of metaphor are found in William Wordsworth poems and what does the meaning of each metaphor. It was aimed to identify the kinds of metaphor and to analyze the meaning of each metaphor found in William Wordsworth’s poems. There were four steps in collecting the data of this research, namely; analyzing, identification, classification and interpretation. Furthermore, this research is analyzed by using semiotic approach, it is explained how symbol used in comparing two things as the concept of metaphor. Then, each of metaphor found in William Wordsworth are categorized by using Lakoff’s theory of metaphor; conceptual metaphor and synaesthetic metaphor. Based on the analysis of the data there is one type of metaphor in eight poems of William Wordsworth and the meaning of each metaphor is different, it is depends on the symbol used to express its idea and aim.
