The objective of this research is to find out whether photograph can improve students writing recount text. The population of this research was eight grade of SMP Negeri 1 Atinggola that consists of 103 students. This research used purposive sampling technique in getting the sample namely 21 students as the eighth grade of class 83. The method of this research is pre experiment design by taking one group pretest - posttest design. Meanwhile, in collecting the data, the researcher used written form test as the instrument of this research and t- test was used in analyzing the data. The result of this research proved that photograph can effect significantly the student's ability in writing recount text. It showed by statistical analysis that tcount is larger than the tlist. The value of the tcount was 20.1 and the tlist was 19,5. It can be formulated as 20.1 > 19,5 with the degree of freedom = (n - 1) = (21-1)=20 at the level significance =0,05. It means that by photograph as instrumental in teaching process can improve students' ability in writing recount text.
