Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to describe the Javanese students' pronunciation of English consonants. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The participants were three of English Department students (JSE) of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo who had been chosen purposively, which are the descent of both Javanese parents and speak Javanese in daily. The source of data were audio material of Javanese students' pronunciation of a reading text provided. The data findings were analyzed based on the theory of place and manner of articulation by McMahoon (2002). The writer chose 32 words represent of all English consonants, and analyzed the production sound of each consonant compared to English native speaker's pronunciation. Based on the final result of this study, JSE do not produce the intelligible English of all consonant sounds. The most difficult pronunciation is the differentiation between the English and Javanese consonants. Accordingly, English consonant phones are not found in Javanese are an initial hurdle in pronouncing intelligible English pronunciation. The prominent weakness for JSE is in producing the fricatives sound. In pronouncing the fricatives consonants of English they tend to produce the sound in plosive. The voiced alveolar approximant /r/ is the specific characteristics of the Javanese dialect that it is produced by stronger squeeze of air and tap of the tongue. However, the result convinces that some of unfamiliar phones of English can be pronounced appropriately. The writer suggest that students must set their interest to learn more about way of producing consonant phoneme of English, especially the accuracy of manner and place of articulation, and take a routine practice of saying unfamiliar sound to their L1.
