Abstract

English Department, Letters and Culture Faculty, Gorontalo State University, 2015, Principal advisor Indri Wirahmi Bay, S.PD, M.A; and Co Supervisor, Farid Muhamad, S.PD, M.A. The study aim is to know the connotative meaning in Twain's story "The prince and the pauper". It focuses on concept of positive connotation and negative connotation meaning. The research method in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The researcher determines a words and phrases which have connotation, such us individual emotional reaction, expression over, symbol of feeling, and parable value. The research found 41 words and phrases of connotations which are divided into two types of connotations; they are positive connotations and negative connotations. Positive connotations are meanings that have a good meaning or have the decency value whereas negative connotations are a meaning that contains the value irreverence.
