Abstract
ABSTRACT Akolo, Husain (2018) : The Violation of Quality and Relevance Maxims in "The Blind Side". A movie directed by John Lee Hancock. Skripsi. English Education Study Program. Jefriyanto Saud S.Pd, M.A. This research is a descriptive research using pragmatics approach, particularly, the cooperative principles. In most circumstances, the assumption of cooperation is so pervasive that it can be stated as a cooperative principle of a conversation and elaborated in four sub-principles, called maxim. Grice (1975 p. 51) stated that Cooperative principles makes your conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged." The fourth maxims proposed by Grice are quantity, quality, relevance, and manner maxims. This research took conversations consisting of quality and relevance maxims used in "The Blind Side" movie as the data. This research was aimed to describe the quality and relevance maxims employed in the conversations of the movie and describe the aspects that make the utterances of the participants violate that maxims in relation to Grice's cooperative principles. The results of the analysis can be seen as follows: first the violation on the 20 data is consisting of some data which violates because to showing anger, hiding something, and change topic of speak. From the data, the big reasons why the speaker and the interlocutor violate the maxim in the blind side movie are to hiding something and sometimes to refusing offers.
