Abstract
ABSTRACT
Recently, scholars are interested to examine the poems of Wilfred Owen, such as structure and pragmatic elements. Nevertheless, it seemingly limited study that investigates how the poet related his works to The Great War. Therefore, this study attempted to fill this gap by providing insightful analysis. More specifically, this study is aimed to analyze the certain structures of Wilfred Owen's poems as well as the worldview of The Great War portrayed within. This includes: 1) Greater Love; 2) Disabled; 3) The Chances; 4) Apologia Pro PeomateMeo; 5) A Terre; 6) Wild with All Regrets; 7) Smile, Smile, Smile; 8) Dulce et Decorum Est.
This research sets out qualitative method. It lies on interpretation based on the data acquired. The researcher employs Waluyo'stheory entailed the elements of poem, and the concept of genetic structuralism formulated by Lucien Goldmann.Having analyzed the poems, the researcher firstly, identified the structures that build up the characteristics of Owen's poems. Subsequently, genetic structure revealed the social condition of The Great War according to the poet's point of view.
The result of this study puts forward certain structures portrayed within Wilfred Owen's poems. It carries out diction, imagery, and figurative language seen from its physical structure, while deep structure comprises theme, feeling, and message.
Moving into the worldview of The Great War, it appears that Owen attempted to showcase the following features: 1) Victims; 2) Misery; 3) Weather; 4) Motive of Soldier; 5) Reward; 6) Weapon; and 7) Social View.
