Rahmawaty Mamu, S.Pd, M.Pd The objective of this research is to find the dominant of students' memory in English Department students 5th semester especially in reading and also to identify the factors that influence of dominant memory especially in reading. The subject of this research is the 5th Semester of English Department Students which consists of 16 students. The method of this research is descrptive quantitave method. Meanwhile, in collecting the data, the researcher used essay test as the instrument of this research and also used questionnaire (Open ended questions). Then, in analyzing the data the researcher used some steps such as 1) analyzed by using rubric of essay test 2) calculation precentage of dominant memory 3) description open ended questions and then description by theory of Shankweiler (1979) The result of this research showed that the dominant of memory in 5th semester English Depaertment is conceptual memory. It is based on the calculation of dominant memory, conceptual memory 63, 64% and lexical memory 47, 91%. The factors that influence of working memory are age and poor reader/good reader. Based on the data students categorized in poor reader. Finally the dominant memory is conceptual memory. Based on the findings, it was suggested to the English Teacher make appropriate method based on the memory that students use. Key words : Memory, Reading
