Abstract

Debating is verbal communication that applies politeness maxim. Debating requires speakers to be more polite in attitude and language use. In delivering speech, debaters must show their polite act by speaking politely, praising, and appreciating to other. This research aims to know the kinds of politeness maxims in USA Presidential election debating in 2012. This research is conducted qualitatively. The data are found from three debate sessions of USA presidential election debating in 2012. They obtain the varieties of maxims proposed by Leech. There are six maxims in using language applied by two candidates, they are Mr. President Barrack Obama and Mr. Governor Mitt Romney. 48 utterances include in kinds of politeness maxims, where; 4 utterances in the tact, 1 utterance in generosity, 22 utterances in approbation, 2 utterances in modesty, 12 utterances in agreement; and 7 utterances in sympathy maxim. Those maxims might be useful for students and lecturers in the use of language especially in debating. Keywords: Politeness, Maxim, Debating
