Abstract
ABSTRACT Hardiyanti R. Bokings, 2017 Students' perception of self confidence in a debate competition, Letters and Culture Faculty, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Advisor (1) Nonny Basalama M.A, Ph.D, Advisor (2) Karmila Machmud M.A, Ph.D There are three criteria in debate. They are matter, method, and manner. In this research I focused on self-confidence which is include in manner. Self-confidence become the most important thing in debate because it is considered as the priority of being a debater. Addition, through self-confidence the students' great performance in a debate can be achieved. Therefore, this research is a study about Students' perception of self-confidence in a debate competition. This research aims to portray the students' perception of self-confidence in a debate competition, also to find out the types of self-confidence that the students are have. The research conducted by using one method which is interview and using semi-structure interview in collecting the data. The participants of this research consist of 8 students, who have been the finalist students participating in NUDC 2016, in Universitas Negeri Gorontalo (University level). The result of this research showed that the confidence in debate is needed because it is like the playmaker in debate. A good speaking skill and good analysis that the students are have in debate, will be useless without the absence of self-confidence. Also, based on result, I found there are 4 students who have an ordinary self-confidence and 4 students have an extraordinary self-confidence.
