Abstract
ABSTRACT Andi Tenry Fada Sumaga. 321 412 105. 2018. "Repetition in Political Speeches Made by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton" Skripsi. English Department, Faculty of Letters and Culture, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. The first advisor is Sri Widyarti Ali, S.Pd., M.Hum and second advisor is Fahria Malabar, S.Pd., M.A. This research aimed to find out the types and the function of repetition in political speeches made by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. It used the theory of repetition by Burton (2010). Firstly, the types of repetition focused on the repetition of words, phrases, and clauses. Those types of repetition are Anaphora, Epistrophe and Polysyndeton. Secondly, the function of repetition which are emphasizing, giving emotional function, and clarifying. There are ten recent speeches delivered by Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton used as the object of the research. Moreover, this research applies a qualitative method by using observation to collect the data. This data of repetition further would be identified and classified based on the types and would be analyzed base on the function. As the result, the researcher found that there is a repetition in political speeches. In Anaphora and Epistrophe, there were repetition of words, phrases, and clauses. And in Polysyndeton there is only repetition of word. furthermore, each repetition has its own function and effect which makes it is unique. There are emphasizing, giving emotional function, and clarifying. Therefore, all the representation of the repetition used in this research is an effort of the speaker to attract the audiences to support their particular objectives through the use of stylistic device.
