It was supervised by Indri Wirahmi Bay, S.Pd, MA and Sri Widyarti Ali, S.Pd, M.Hum. The aim of this study is to analyze the use of synonym substitutions in students' paraphrased text. A synonym substitution is one of the techniques in students' paraphrasing by substituting the words that have the same meaning. The methodology of this study is qualitative. Further, the subject of the study is ten students of English Education Study Program in the fifth-semester. The two types of synonym, namely strict and loose are examined to find out both the appropriate and inappropriate synonyms in students' paraphrasing (Jackson, 1986). The findings reveal that students' paraphrasing is still categorized poor because of distorted meaning by the unsuitable synonym in context. In addition, this study finds the issues of synonym substitution such as distortion meaning, inappropriate synonym, and patchwriting.
