Abstract
ABSTRACT Abdul Muis Almudin. 2018. Metaphorical Meaning in Sylvia Plath's Poems, Skripsi. English Education Department, Faculty of Letters and Cultures, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. The First Advisor is Adriansyah Abu Katili, S.S. M.Pd and The Second Advisor is Farid Muhamad, S.Pd., M.A. This research is aimed to analyze the meaning of each metaphor found in 5 Sylvia Plath's poems Metaphors, Tulips, Morning Song, Mirror, and Child. This research uses qualitative method. Qualitative method is research that produces descriptive data, in the form of words or spoken data of people or figures were observed. It uses new criticism approach as the base approach for analyzing the data obtained from 5 Sylvia's poems. To analyze the meaning of each metaphor, it uses the theory by Knowles and Moon (2006, p.2), they stated that metaphor has three elements; namely vehicle, topic, and ground. The research found that there are 6 metaphors in "Metaphors", 9 metaphors in "Tulips", 1 metaphor in "Morning Song", 2 metaphors in "Mirror", and 1 metaphor in "Child". From the analysis of the metaphor, it was found that the meaning of the metaphors of Sylvia Plath's poems tell about pregnancy, the obstacle of life, happiness, truth, lies, hope and dream.
