Abstract
This study is aimed at investigate studentsâ perception towards difficulties in academic writing. The study was conducted within 10 students of English Department State University of Gorontalo class of 2016. The data were gathered through semi-structured interview and analyzed by thematic analysis as the part of qualitative research method. Result revealed that studentâs main problem is lack of formal vocabulary. Other challenges find by students are grammar, critical thinking, sentence connection, and academic writing style or mechanic. It was also found that the factors cause those difficulties are less reading, less practicing, did not taught necessary skill at the beginning of university life of the students. Furthermore, study also discovered studentsâ needs related to teaching-learning activities. Those needs are lecturers give more example, and explanation regarding to the skill to be successful in academic writing, and extra classroom duration to give feedback on students writing. Therefore, this study recommends the students to find right attitudes to be successful in academic writing. For EFL lecturer, it is highly recommended to emphasize the use of English language in all teaching"learning process, and to pay attention to students needs regarding to academic writing issue Keywords: academic writing, studentsâ perception
