ABSTRACT ARIFIN. 2017. NIM 321413065. A Descriptive Study on Students' Ability in Analyzing "Maria Concepcion" Short Story on Prose Subject. Skripsi. English Department, Letters and Culture Faculty, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Advisor (1) Dr. H. Harto Malik, M.Hum (2) Rosma Kadir, S.Pd., M.A. This study is aimed to discover and describe students' ability in analyzing "Maria Concepcion" short story on Prose subject based on several intrinsic elements; plot, character, setting, and theme. The method of this study was mixed methods. It used document as data collection procedure. Regarding the data findings which analyzed students' worksheets, it was found that the entire of students' ability toward analyzing the short story categorized into average. However, there were some students who produced long analysis in various aspects and supported their analysis with the textual evidence from the text (short story). By using scoring rubric, this research obtained the description about the students' ability toward analyzing the short story. Overall, most of students could not thoroughly describe all of the elements of plot structure. The students were able to identify main character, but the discussion of the main character did not enough to support their analysis. In analyzing setting, the students could only provide some description of the setting in terms of the time and place in the story without giving explanation about the atmosphere/mood which develops their analysis. The theme is the lowest achievement of students, from 19 students; only one student who got the highest score in analyzing this item.
