Abstract
Abstract Meri Sutari Diani, 2017. NIM 321413152. Grammatical Cohesion on Poems. English Department, Letters and Culture Faculty, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. Advisor (1) Novi Rusnarty Usu, S.Pd., MA (2) Indri Wirahmi Bay, S.Pd., MA. Grammatical cohesion has been taken into account as an essential part to express the meaning of a language regarding its role to systematize the grammatical features of a language including in literary works. In regards to the importance of grammatical cohesion in literary works, this study applies the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976) as well as qualitative method to investigate the types of grammatical cohesion on poems. As a result, this study discovers six types of grammatical cohesion on poems; personal reference, demonstrative reference, nominal substitution, additive conjunction, adversative conjunction and clausal conjunction. The reference; personal and demonstrative reference are used more significantly than the other types of cohesive devices. This study also reveals that the use of cohesive items such as personal reference and demonstrative reference are important, because they provide the notion of recognizable meaning and establish anaphoric relation to make the poems more beautiful in terms of their rhymes and language styles. Thus, the grammatical cohesion in poems does not damage the rhyme, figurative meaning and sense of the poems, instead, it adds the aesthetical features of poems and makes poems more understandable. It is because the previous words explained by the next words, called cohesive devices make the poems more meaningful and readable. Therefore, poems with their beautiful rhymes, exceptional characteristics of language styles and understandable meaning are grammatically as well as semantically cohesive. In other words, grammar cannot be ruled out even in literary works such as poems. Key Words: Cohesion, Grammatical Cohesion, Poems.
