Abstract
The aim of this research is to analyze anxiety and defense mechanisms portrayed in Lauren Oliver's Before I Fall I novel. The method used qualitative method and psychoanalytic approach. The study aims to figure out the anxiety shown in the character of Samantha Kingston and Juliet Sykes from the novel. The study also aims to analyze the defense mechanisms used by the characters to overcome the anxiety. Sigmund Freud's theory of structure of personality was used in identifying and classifying the anxiety and defense mechanisms. The results show that Samantha Kingston suffered from neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety, and reality anxiety. To overcome them, Samantha used introjection, reaction formation, rationalization, displacement, denial, repression, and projection. The dominant defense mechanism used by Sam was displacement. Juliet Sykes suffered neurotic anxiety and reality anxiety. To overcome them, Juliet used repression. Keywords: Anxiety, defense mechanisms, structure of personality, psychoanalytic approach.
