Abstract
Abstract This research objective is to investigate the similarities and differences between English and Buol Language in past verb form, so that the difficulties of language learners in learning the second language can be predicted. The contrastive analysis approach was used to construct this research through taking samples from past verb of both English and Buol Languages. After the researcher analyzed and compared the form of English and Buol Language past verb, it can be concluded that there are similarities between the two languages. Firstly, English and Buol language use affixation to mark the past form. And secondly, both of the languages have morphophonemic process in some of their verb in order to mark the past form. Aside from the similarities, the researcher also finds the difference between both of the language. Both of the languages use different affixation to mark the past form. English uses suffix after the verb to turn it into past form while Buol Language uses prefix before the verb. From the findings of the research, it can predict the advantages and disadvantages that learners will face when learning both of the languages. Learners that understand Buol language can understand how English past verb rules easier as English have more structured rules. As for those who are learning Buol Language, they have to understand more about complicated structure when forming past verb in Buol Language.
