Advisor (1) Prof. Nonny Basalama, M.A., Ph.d (2) Dr. Usman Pakaya, M.A Speaking is one of the four basic language skills. This is the most essential to be mastered by language learners. Therefore, students who have passed the English subject must have the ability to speak. Brown (2004, p.157) asserts that there are five elements of speaking recognized in analyzing the speech process, they are pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. However, sometimes students have difficulties in speaking. This issue has become the common phenomenon particularly found in learning process, when the students present their assignment in front of the class they found difficulties in speaking. Thus, this study aims to explore what are the studentsâ difficulties in speaking English by looking at their score in English subject. The data is obtained from five participants who have low score in speaking. Descriptive method is used in this study. The result is described based on the interview. This method is used to investigate studentsâ difficulties in speaking. The result shows that the students in SMA Muhammadiyah Batudaa have some problems that prevented them to speak English, especially five participants who have already interviewed by the researcher. They are pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, fluency, comprehension, nothing to say, accent, self-confidence, shyness, nervousness, and limited time. The result of this study signifies that the studentsâ in SMA Muhammadiyah Batudaa still experienced various difficulties when speak English in front of the class.
