Abstract
ABSTRACT Mohammad Rival Ali. 321 414 022. 2018. "Teaching Vocabulary by Using Duolingo This Research Conducted at The Seventh Grade Students of Smp Negeri 1 Batudaa Academic Year 2017/2018)" Undergraduated Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Letter and Culture. The first advisor is Dr. Hj. Rasuna Talib, M.Hum and the second advisor is Helena Badu, S.Pd., M.Pd Expending Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) with the purpose to support students acquire vocabularies is one of the devices in teaching and learning English. This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of Duolingo application as internet-based media in students' competence of English vocabulary. Pre-experimental design was adopted in employing this study by conducting one group pretest and post-test. The sample size was 22 students of the seventh grade in SMP Negeri 1 Batudaa. The data were collected from a test, namely objective test. Statistical analysis used to analyze the data used t-test formula. The findings revealed that the Duolingo Application statistically impacted the students 'competence in mastering English Vocabulary. It is suggested for English teacher to use the Duolingo application as teaching media to teach vocabulary. Duolingo is very stimulating for students which has been evidenced in this research. The use of Duolingo application should be used outside the classroom because it makes students to be more engaged; thus, students often obtain more vocabularies. Keyword: Duolingo, CALL, vocabulary
