Abstract
Since phrasal verbs using helps to establish good quality of writing, the problematic issue in phrasal verbs area becomes considerable attention among grammarians and researchers to further investigate phrasal verbs using in linguistics field. Once the phenomenon is recognized in English Department, this research aims to discover the types of inappropriateness in the using of phrasal verbs. This study utilizes descriptive qualitative method in which the data are selectively taken from students' creative writing in English Department. The result showed that there are 17 inappropriatenesses detected which are divided into two categories namely syntactical inappropriateness and inappropriateness in terms of its using in sentence. Syntactical inappropriateness consists of the combination of verb + adverb + preposition, verb + pronoun + adverb, and verb + noun + adverb. Meanwhile, inappropriate particle choice, inappropriate additional particle, arbitrary combination, inappropriate basic verb choice and skipped particle are regarded as the types of inappropriateness in terms of its using in sentence. Therefore, the research result is expected to give a significant contribution in teaching and learning process of phrasal verbs knowledge and usage in order to encourage futher improvement.
