Abstract
The common problem faced by students in academic writing is how to connect one word with another word in the text which is also called a lexical cohesion. This study examined students problems on composing an academic writing well, particularly a literature review, in order to consider the use of lexical cohesion in their academic writing. The aim of this study is to find out the types of lexical cohesions made by English Department students. The participants of this study are the students in semester four who are enrolling Writing for Academic Purposes subject. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze students' literature review. Halliday and Hasan's theory (1976) used as the guideline to analyze the types of lexical cohesions that are used by the students on their literature review. The result showed that there are 2 types of lexical cohesion found, namely reiteration (repetition, synonymy, near synonymy, superordinate, general word) and collocation. Reiteration is the dominant types that appeared with repetition as the highest frequency. Therefore, the result of this research give contribution toward students and enhance the awareness of the students about the using of lexical cohesion in academic writing.
