Abstract
This research aims to identify the types of aphasia experienced by the sufferer by looking at the symptoms that appear. Everyone has a part of the brain that functions to process language. However, if that is damaged, it will result in language disorders, one of which is aphasia. The aphasia sufferer will show symptoms that vary depending on the type of aphasia. One of the cases of aphasia was found on the main character (Lotje Sodderland) in Netflix documentary "My Beautiful Broken Brain." The researcher identified Lotje Sodderland's type of aphasia seen from the symptoms in her utterances in the documentary movie. The qualitative method is used in this research. The researcher used observation and documentation techniques to collect the data and then analyzed using the content analysis method. After that, the data were categorized according to Ardila's theory (2014). Finally, it can be concluded that the symptom of Broca's aphasia is the most dominant suffered by the main character, seen from the utterances and conversations that appear in the documentary movie. there are 5 of 7 symptoms that occurred in Lotje's case. The symptom that the most often occurs is non-fluent with 55 data found, the second is naming with 15 data, the third is agrammatism with 10 data, and the last is phonological literal paraphasia and verbal paraphasia with 3 data found. On the other hand, the symptom that have not occurred are repetition and phonetic deviation. Furthermore, this research would provide the explanations of aphasia, its types, and the symptoms experienced by the sufferer, which would help readers gain insight into how the characteristics of people with aphasia to more understand about how to communicate with them or can find out early symptoms of aphasia itself in order to get proper treatment.
