Abstract
Desi Faujiah Ngadi, 2022. NIM 321 417 040. Reducing Students' Anxiety in Speaking English by Using a Board Game. Skripsi. English Department, Letters and Culture Faculty, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo. It was supervised by Prof. Karmila Machmud, S.Pd., M.A., Ph.D. as the first advisor, and Fahria Malabar, S.Pd., M.A as the second advisor. This research aims to determine whether board games can reduce students' anxiety in speaking English as well as to see how the level of students' anxiety changes before and after being given treatment using a board game. The method used in this research is quantitative, in which the data is presented in the form of numbers and tested using statistical formulas. This research was a pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test design so that the sample in this research was grade eight A with a total of 20 students at SMP Negeri 3 Paguyaman. To obtain data, the researcher used the FLCAS Questionnaire as a research instrument and administered pre-test, treatment, and post-test as a technique for collecting data. Then the data was analyzed using Likert's scoring, and the students' anxiety was categorized using the FLCAS anxiety scale, which was adopted from Oetting's scale. The results of this research indicate a decrease in students' anxiety about speaking English after being given treatment using a board game. This can be seen from the mean score of students' anxiety before being given treatment or in the pre-test, which was 113.4, while the mean score after being given treatment or in the post-test was 86.95 with the hypothesis formula H0: µ1 = µ2 and H1: µ1 # µ2, then it can be seen that 113.4 # 86.95 (113.4 is not equal to 86.95), so it can be indicated that H1 is accepted and H0 is rejected. In the pre-test, it was found that students were very anxious (3 students), anxious (12 students), and mildly anxious (5 students), and in the post-test, they were relaxed (13 students), very relaxed (7 students). The researcher also used the t-test to test the results of the research, and the results showed that the t-test value was -19.08 while the t-table value was 2.093. This indicates that the t-test is not equal to the t-table; in other words, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, so it can be concluded that using a board game (speaking board game) can reduce students' anxiety in speaking English.
