Abstract
This research aims to find out the types of gestures and the factors that influence the choice of gestures in conversation by students in English Department at State of Gorontalo University. This research used qualitative methods using observation and interviews as data collection methods and analyzed using Miles and Huberman's theory (1994) which consisted of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. As the result, this research took 10 students as the participant and found three types gestures which are; adaptor, emblem, and illustrator have been used by students in their conversation. Also, the factor that affected the decision in choosing gesture by students is experience-environment. From this research, it can be concluded that there are three types of gestures used by students in their conversations and there are factors that influence the selection of gestures by students in their conversations.
