Abstract
Communicating with each other will be easy and much better if humans directly say what is on their minds, but this is sometimes contrary to what happens in the real world. The fact is that humans cannot be sincere all the time, sometimes they keep their intentions, meanings and purpose hidden behind the sentences they say. This type of sentence is called sarcasm, which is a sentence that has an ordinary tone at first glance but has the opposite meaning of the sentence spoken by the speaker. Sarcasm itself is a phenomenon that occurs every day, and an example of this can be seen in the Joker movie. This study aimed to analyze what are the purposes of sarcastic utterances spoken by the characters in the movie that have been mentioned. The researcher categorized the data based on types of sarcasm purposes by using Attardo's theories (2001) and also used the theory of Miles and Huberman in analyzing the data and the steps was data reduction, data display and the last one is drawing conclusions. The results showed that the actors in the movie express three types of sarcasm purposes, i.e. sophistication, evaluation and, another result which was a bit surprising since it turned out that one sentence of sarcasm can have multiple purposes i.e. sophistication and tool for politeness. As a result, the researcher concluded that sophistication was the most dominant type compared to others, it was based on the fact that the characters prefer to play with words in the movie. This research is expected to increase a deeper understanding for readers about sarcasm and as a reference for future researchers.
