Abstract
This research investigates the used of diction by men and women in their literary work. The aim of this study is to illustrate the diction used in poem of men and women students of English Department. A qualitative descriptive method was employed in the data findings. In collecting the data, the researcher observed the poems, identified the diction used by male and female students and put them into the table. After the data were selected, the researcher categorized them based on type of diction using theory by Haas and other experts' theories about language and diction. As a result, the researcher found 3 types of diction used by male and female students, namely connotation and denotation meaning, general and specific meaning and figurative language. Male and female students express themselves different through the words choice. Male students mostly used "assertive" form while female students used "emotive" form. The conclusion of this study, both male and female students have different ways of choosing words to describe or reflect their feelings in their literary work such as poem.
