Abstract
This study aims to examine the types of womans language features used by Enola Holmes character in Enola Holmes movie, by using theory by Lakoff (1973). This study applied the descriptive qualitative method. The data was collected by using note-taking method by watching the movie, selecting, and identifying the data that belong to womans language features by Lakoffs theory. To analyze the data, the steps was preparing the data, identifying, making interpretation or meaning, and the last was drawing a conclusion. Based on the result of the study, it shows that from ten types of womans language features proposed by Lakoff (1973) the researcher found nine types used by Enola, there are lexical hedges or fillers, tag questions, rising intonation, empty adjectives, color words, intensifier, hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms, and emphatic stress. Enola does not use avoidance of strong swear words in her utterances. It is because she is an educated woman and has a good personality, so she does not use swear words. Besides that, the background of the movie, which was set in the 19th century, requires women to behave politely, including how to speak. In conclusion, the use of language will not be separated from the background and characterization of a person. Different backgrounds, different values, and norms will affect the difference in characterization, which then affects the language used. In addition, an understanding of womans language features is needed, so people can understand the relationship between language and gender, especially in understanding the womens language in social life. Hence, this study is expected to increase the readers knowledge about womens language features, to be a reference material for further researcher, and to be a helpful reference for the readers. Hope this study can give a contribution for lecturers, so they can teach their students to analyze womans language, and can enrich students knowledge about womens language features by using movie as the media.
