Abstract
FIRMA DEWI RAHMAYANTI. 2022. ÃÃ..."FACILITATING EFL STUDENTSÃÃ DEVELOPMENT OF SPEAKING SKILLS THROUGH CUE CARD MEDIAÃÃ. (An Action Research on X-UPW-2 Students at SMK Negeri 1 Gorontalo, Academic Year 2021/2022). English Educational Study Program, Postgraduate Program of Gorontalo State University. Advisor 1: Prof. Karmila Machmud, S.Pd, M.A., Ph.D, Advisor 2: Novriyanto Napu, S.Pd, M.App. Ling, Ph.D Whilst a myriad of scholarly works on the implementation of Cue Cards in the teaching and learning of English-speaking skills in Indonesia has pivoted exclusively around the Junior High School students and common Senior High School students, a comprehensive contribution unearths very little in how Cue Card application has meticulously been levelled at the Vocational High School students to date. To this end, the present practical-based classroom action research shed light upon addressing such a need. Targeting particularly at the Vocational High School students in grade 10, the present study sought to disclose how the development of the studentsÃÃ speaking skill could be facilitated by leveraging the Cue Cards and what benefits and challenges could be acknowledged from the media used in speaking instruction. This study was undertaken at the SMK 1 state vocational high school Gorontalo with 27 students majoring in travel business program (Usaha Perjalanan Wisata) as the research subjects. Employing a sequential exploratory mixed-method design, the present CAR study relied on the observation, speaking test and questionnaire as the research instruments to collect the data, and entailed two cycles of action implementation. This study revealed that the application of the Cue Card successfully enhanced studentsÃÃ speaking skills by 26.28% statistically, with 55.56% in the first cycle and 81.84% in the second cycle. Following the open-ended survey questionnaires, it appeared that due to the efficacy of Cue Cards, these attractive speaking media benefitted students when it comes to speaking performance activities, such Cue Cards provide ample advantages, among others helping students to remind the ideas, promoting fluency, creating interesting and attractive learning environment, encouraging students to be active learners, increasing studentsÃÃ confidence in speaking.
